Scientists were puzzled. Computer models have not accurately predicted the speed of melting in the Arctic. Both the summer of 2005 and 2007 far exceeded all records for loss of ice during the summer. September of 2007 showed 23% less sea ice than the previous record low.
It now looks like it may be the one-two punch. Arctic surface temperatures are warming because less sea ice and ice sheets mean less reflected solar rays. In addition, there is a natural and cyclical increase in the amount of energy transfer in the atmosphere as storms move north with ocean currents.
The combination of the man-made and natural warming, have come together to cause an unprecedented change in the sea ice. There is disagreement over which pushed the Arctic over the edge, but there is agreement that the two together are causing serious trouble.
