Soda Vending Machine Uses 4X the Energy of a Home Refrig

If you are paying the power bill for a soda dispenser, you might be surprised to learn they use more than four times the energy of a standard home refrigerator.

There are, however, some options.

There is a devise called a Vending Miser that turns off the lights and cooling system when people are not nearby. It is motion activated, so when someone comes near, the lights and cooling system turn back on. (Hopefully there are people around enough to keep the soda cold – although it can stay cold a long time once it is cooled down.) Using a Vending Miser can cut energy use (and cost) by 50%.

If your machine is primarily for your employees, you could replace it with a refrigerator and a collection cup. Most employees are honest and with the energy and cost savings, collecting all the money might not be as critical.

With either solution, in addition to saving money you are reducing your carbon footprint and greenhouse gasses. Even though it may not be much, every little bit helps. Notyak!
