Stop Burping - Reduce Greenhouse Gas

Stop Burping to Reduce Greenhouse Gas

It has been estimated that burping cows in the UK make up as much as 3% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Apparently, even though we may not hear the burping, cows are continually burping up methane gas. (We presume these are cows all over the world – not just the UK.)

An effort is now underway to develop a grass that would cut the amount of methane the cows would be burping up. This would be done by making the grass more easily digestible.

Just to make things interesting, some researchers think more digestible grass will actually increase the methane produced. It’s OK, however, because more easily digestible grass will translate into more productivity by the cow and therefore less methane per unit of milk.

While this may sound a bit silly, it is actually very serious research with important implications. Countries like New Zealand raise large amounts of cattle and sheep and these efforts are vital to their self-imposed reduction in greenhouse gas generation.
