New Zealand researchers have discovered a microbe that “eats” methane. (Methane is a green house gas that is far more harmful than carbon dioxide and it is produced as trash decomposes in landfills.)
This microbe was found in New Zealand hot springs that are 158 degrees F and have a makeup similar to stomach acid. If they can live there, New Zealand scientists think maybe they could be adapted to live in landfills or other methane producing sites like mines.
The original research was published in Nature and the bug has been named Methylokorus infernorum. When, do you suppose, we will add that to our everyday vocabulary?
